Lipectomy of the Neck (Submental Lipectomy)

Fat is often removed from the neck at the time of facelift surgery. Usually a small incision is made under the chin and excess fat is removed using the fat suction technique. The incision can be enlarged and the muscles of the neck tightened at the same time. For some patients this adds much to the facelift procedure and enhances the appearance considerably.

In young people who have excess fat in the neck it is possible to remove fat by the suction technique without performing a facelift. This is done through small incisions beneath the chin and earlobes. In most cases the skin will tighten and give a very nice appearance to the neck. If the skin does not tighten following fat removal alone, it may become necessary to perform a facelift later to tighten the skin.

In rare instances following removal of fat in the neck, there may be irregularities or temporary weakness of the muscles of expression. These conditions usually improve with time.

This procedure, if done without a facelift, is usually performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation and the patient can go home following surgery.
